Notepad++ Error Opening File For Writing
I’ve just updated to the latest release of Notepad++ (Notepad Plus Plus) and hit a snag while doing so. Read the rest of this post »
Notepad++ Multiple Instances
I’ve been a big fan of Notepad++ (Notepad Plus Plus) for some time now, and sometimes it’s useful to open multiple instances of the editor.
In the past I’ve done this by simply right-clicking on the file tab in Notepad++ and selecting one of the ‘new instance” options at the bottom of the list.
However, I’d rather just open a new instance directly as with many other programs Read the rest of this post »
Speed Up Windows
Want a simple tip that might speed up Windows on your PC? Read on…
I’m doing some pretty hefty data processing in Access just at the moment and wondered if I could speed things up by adjusting the priority of the Access process from Windows Task Manager. However when I looked at Task Manager I noticed a Real Player process that was using as much CPU time as the Access process and sometimes more. Strange as I haven’t used Real Player for a while. Time for a bit of investigative surfing… Read the rest of this post »
z-index not working?
Dealing with the CSS property z-index can be one of the more frustrating tasks in CSSdom. It sometimes just doesn’t seem to do what you are sure you have told it to do…
And there’s the clue – what you are sure you have told it to do may be quite different from what you have actually told it to do.
The reality is that z-index does not apply equally to all objects – it critically depends on something referred to as ‘stacking context’. Z-index specifically sets the stack level of the element within the current stacking context. The elements you are battling with may not belong to the same stacking context, in which case z-index will not control how they overlap… Read the rest of this post »
Notepad++ file saving problem: “Please check whether if this file is opened in another program”
I’m playing with some code to make Internet Explorer 8 show the border-radius css property.
Support for border-radius was finally introduced in IE9, but there are plenty of visitors to my various sites who have not yet updated from IE8, and even a dropping but significant number using IE7 and IE6! I decided it was time to bite the bullet and find a workaround for the radius property so these visitors see what I intended them to see…
However what has become a pain is editing code for the local file in notepad++ while monitoring results in Internet Explorer – IE grabs hold of the file and won’t let go! Read the rest of this post »
Use Google Analytics to Test Website Speed
Ever wondered how fast your website loads for your users?
Are you bothered?
Well, bothered you should. It’s hard enough getting visitors to your site in the first place, and then converting their visit into your measure of success, without putting a huge obstacle in the way. Read the rest of this post »

Excluding your visits from Google Analytics reports
Some time ago I did a post on how to remove yourself from google analytics reports.
As a quick extra tip, don’t forget if you have multiple websites, e.g. your blog and your main website, and you are using Google Analytics to analyse visits to all of these, then you will need to complete this exercise for each website so that your own visits do not appear in the stats. The cookie is unique to the domain you visit, so if the blog and the website are on different domains then you need to have the cookie in place for each of them.
This may seem obvious, but some may assume that because they have the cookie from their main website that they are also not being included in their blog reports…which isn’t the case.
Hope that update helps.

Don’t drop the ball! Set an Outlook email reminder

Here’s a simple tip to avoid dropping the ball on delegated tasks and questions…
You know the score – you send an email asking someone to do something for you, then with the myriad of other things you’re dealing with, you realise after a few weeks that you’ve heard nothing back. Read the rest of this post »
Sweet Tweets – better blogging with Twitter
I’m trying out a new WordPress plugin, Twitter Tools.
The idea is to make this whole social media thing a bit easier to manage.
It looks like it can play various games, but the attraction to me was to automatically create a tweet when I publish a new blog post, with a link back to the post.
If you’re reading this having arrived from Twitter, then clearly it worked!
